Sacred origin of the Yamuna amidst pristine peaks.
Yamunotri
Yamunotri
Yamunotri is the westernmost shrine in the Char Dham circuit. Pilgrims experience divine serenity and breathtaking Himalayan vistas.
Yamunotri is the westernmost shrine of the sacred Char Dham circuit and the source of the Yamuna, India's second-holiest river. The original temple was built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal and later rebuilt by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the 19th century after it was damaged by an earthquake.
Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the temple sits at 3,293 metres amid glacial peaks. Pilgrims cook rice in the boiling Surya Kund as prasad and worship at the Divya Shila rock before entering the sanctum. The sacred thermal springs and the river's origin at Champasar Glacier create a deeply moving devotional atmosphere.
The yatra involves a scenic 6 km trek from Janki Chatti (or 5 km from Hanuman Chatti) through pine forests and river gorges. Ponies, palanquins, and helicopter services are available. The route is open from May to November; early morning starts are recommended to avoid afternoon clouds and rain.
Best time
April to June and September to November are ideal for smooth travel.
